Best Moments of #NYFW 2017

New York Fashion Week may have wrapped, but the editors and fashion teams have packed their glam bags and are off to cover London Fashion Week. Here in the Big Apple the week of shows came with some interesting shows, crazed schedules, political messages and some noticeable changes in some of the shows. Today we are counting down some of our favorite moments from NYFW Fall 2017. So sit back as we bring you the highlights without the fuss.

NYFW Day 1: Brock Collection/Ulla Johnson

Day one at NYFW has concluded. Today we bring you some highlights of what opening day at the tents looked like for Fall/Winter 2017. We start with the Brock Collection. Never heard of them? Ok here is the rundown. The design team consists of a husband and wife, Laura Vassar and Kris Brock who won the top prize at the CFDA/Vogue fashion fund award. Here comes their first presentation since their big win. We enjoyed this collection and once again from the looks of things, textures and luxe furs continue to make strong statements for next fall (although we prefer faux, we’ll take the real deal as inspiration). There were lady-like looks including pencil skirts, poufy dresses and polished daywear. We loved the cinched waistlines, plaids and gingham patterns with nude and camel tones. Another collection that we enjoyed was Ulla Johnson. Her pieces had bohemian elements with exceptional outerwear tailoring. Knit ruffled dresses, florals and velvet boots all were part of the story in this collection that was not just uplifting but ultra feminine. A solid start to New York Fashion Week!

NYFW Provides Alternative Diversion

We can all agree that many of us are suffering from political fatigue as of late. Even if you never touch upon the topic, somehow you have come across the endless daily headlines. Trying to decipher what is real and what is not in the news is a daily occurrence and using our best judgment has certainly become almost a superhero-like power. With so many polarized points of views and contentious discussions, we all need a bit of distraction and for all those who love fashion there are some ‘alternative options’. Today marks the official first day of New York Fashion Week, which has also been hit with 2017’s first big snow storm. We are also in the midst of award season, with the Grammy’s on February 12th (we will have all the fashion best dressed on the blog), and the Oscars on February 26th. Oh, and FYI there are a handful of quality movies like Fences, Lion, Hidden Figures and La La Land to detract from the world’s chaos.

Now it’s true that the Fashion Industry is going through some transitions. We just learned last week that Riccardo Tisci has said farewell to his post at Givenchy after 12 years (he’s rumored to be headed to Versace). For the past couple of years, the shuffling of head designers at fashion brands have been fast and furious. It seems everyone is trying to find what works best for them in this economy. More American designers are opting to use the ‘see now – buy now’ motto for their fashion shows in order to connect with consumers and drive more sales. European high-end brands have not agreed to go in this direction, yet. And talk about more changes, more shows are presenting downtown as well as some major names have dropped out of the New York schedule. Tommy Hilfiger has moved his show to LA, as well as Rebecca Minkoff, Tom Ford and others. It does leave more room for new designers to find a spot on the calendar in the big apple so that should be refreshing.

Nevertheless, there is an excitement to seeing new collections, ideas, inspirations and yes even the political and social messages mixed with creativity that designers may provide. We can’t wait to see what comes down the runway. So come on board the One Style at a Time fashion train and together let’s enjoy what’s on the horizon for Fall 2017.
