Are the days of the ‘fashion icon’ gone with the wind? Does that sound like a loaded question? Let’s stop for a moment to think about what the term fashion icon really means. Once upon a time it was equivalent to a very famous figure who embodied the term great style. It was synonymous with class, grace and historic moments in fashion that still resonate decades later with the masses. It’s safe to say that when we think of legends of style, we automatically think Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Twiggy among many others. These women not only revolutionized fashion but were some of the most influential figures in their time and even today. Far more times than we can count, Audrey and Marilyn’s looks have been emulated, revamped or served as artistic inspiration. Vibrant colors, provocative sensuality and an explosion of high energetic visual artistry. Those are just some of the elements that can be experienced at the Antonio Lopez exhibition Future Funk Fashion. This extraordinary exhibit opened its doors at El Museo del Barrio on June 14th. Antonio Lopez was a Puerto Rican native who grew up in East Harlem, New York City from the age of seven. A world renown fashion illustrator and artist whose works were prominently found in publications such as Vogue, Elle, The New York Times and Harper’s Bazaar among others. He attended the Fashion Institute of Technology and later moved to Paris to work alongside Karl Lagerfeld. The 2016 Tony awards celebrated the best of the great white way in New York City on Sunday night. Although the Beacon Theatre was buzzing with the who’s who of Broadway, the sadness and devastation was on everyone’s mind from the tragic incident in Orlando earlier in the morning. Comedian James Corden who was the host of the Tony Awards had a very touching opening speech that included, “On behalf of the whole theater community, and every person in this room, our hearts go out to all of those affected by this atrocity…theater is a place where every race, creed, sexuality and gender is equal, is embraced, is loved”. Corden did an extraordinary job as the show’s host and kept a good flow and timing with jokes. The musical ‘Hamilton’, was nominated sixteen times and won for best musical. There was singing, dancing and of course, tons of fantastic red carpet…

Grace Kelly once said, “I favor pearls on screen and in my private life.” She is not alone in her love of pearls as there are many women who even in 2016 still choose pearls as a jewelry piece to wear. I have heard from several ladies that wearing pearls can feel matronly and in all honesty, it can have a conservative aesthetic. Gone are the days when pearls were only attributed to formal attire or just weddings. These days the sense is that all the rules in fashion have gone out the window, although there are some that should still prevail. Since one of the birthstones for the month of June (my birthday month) is the pearl (the other two are alexandrite and moonstone), today we are taking a closer look at how this classic gem can be worn in a more modern and even less formal way. Pearls…

The enigma of Marilyn Monroe continues on through generations and decades later. Today Norma Jean Mortenson would have turned 91 years old and is still remembered as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars and an incomparable iconic fashion figure. How would Marilyn have fit into today’s celebrity obsessed culture if she were still alive? Would she be a fan of the selfie? What would her style look like in 2017? Who would be the design houses that would have the exclusive honor of dressing her today? When you think of Marilyn, you immediately think blonde, wavy bob, red lips, a coquettish demeanor and killer curves. She worked camera angles like no other and it was no secret that she was a magnet for attention with her sex appeal and charm. So many stories have been told, movies have been made and every top celebrity around the world has in some way emulated Marilyn for…
