Hello Fashion Readers,
I am back from a few very busy days but ready to dive back into the fashion discussion. Spring is what many have on their mind as we move past NY, London, Milan and Paris Fall Fashion Weeks!
Today, I want to share an inspiring event I attended this week. The Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology (MFIT) in New York hosted a lecture. The guest of honor was none other than the President of the CFDA & Fashion Designer, Diane Von Furstenberg or as her brand is called DVF. Here are a few highlights:
She discussed the history of how she began her designing career at a very young age in her early 20’s. She spoke adamantly about always wanting to be independent and being able to have the ability to take charge of her life despite being married with two children. She first created the iconic wrap dress in 1973 out of jersey material, simply because it felt “comfortable”. Well three decades later her empire has grown with over 60 boutiques into beauty products, home goods, Ready to wear and more. After discussing her personal and business journey she moved on to talk about her work with the CFDA. From scholarships, Vogue Fashion Fund, Fashion Awards and Fashion Night Out, these are only a few of the many areas this organization has implemented to work with up and coming design talent. They are very involved in doing philanthropic work raising awareness for HIV/Aids, Breast Cancer, Haiti relief and among many others.
Diane talked about personal anecdotes of meeting Diana Vreeland early in her career, she confirmed she does live tweet on Twitter (look for tweets, “Love, Diane”.) Also, how the Internet today is a valid tool for anyone starting a business because it instantly helps you to go global. Her business advice is the following:
1. Have a great relationship with yourself
2. Have a dream!
3. Figure out where you want to go with this dream.
4. Ask yourself, “Do I have something to offer?”
5. Then…GO FOR IT WITH PASSION!
She made it very clear that “Age is an asset, NOT a liability”. She loves working with woman and talking to them. Diane spoke strongly about the empowerment of woman and how happy she is to be as independent as she always wanted to be. Without a doubt, Dian Von Furstenberg is an admirable legend of fashion and a strong, intelligent role model for women at any stage in their life.
